VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE ESTATE PLANNING CLINIC
We are pleased and proud to remind you of a GAYLAW activity that is very important to our organization and to the community at large. Please consider renewing your past commitment to the program or joining our effort as a newcomer. It won't require much time, you'll be very well supported and you'll make a huge difference in someone's life.
On the second Tuesday evening of every month at 6:30 p.m. (see the schedule for 2008 below), GAYLAW volunteers meet with people living with HIV/AIDS at the Elizabeth Taylor Center of Whitman-Walker Clinic located at 14th & R Streets, N.W. to prepare simple planning documents (typically a Will, Advance Medical Directive and/or a Power of Attorney). No experience is required in estate planning or related areas. The documents you will prepare are uncomplicated and are designed for people with little, if any, property or income. A comprehensive AIDS Advocacy Training Manual, E-form documents and close mentoring by WWC staff will give you the necessary support. The time investment is very manageable - typically under 5 hours per client - but the impact you will make on the lives of those in need is tremendous.
The dates for 2010 are:
- March 9
- April 13
- May 11
- June 8
- July 13
- August 10
- September 14
- October 12
- November 9
- December 14
Other Volunteer Opportunities Serving WWC’s Day Treatment Clients
This opportunity is available for attorneys who have completed the March 16, 2010 Estate Planning Clinic training or a prior training session. Volunteers will be required to sign up for both dates associated with either Session 1 or Session 2 (that is both April 20 and May 11 for Session 1 or April 7 and May 12 for Session 2).
During the first meeting, volunteers will meet one-on-one with one client at a time to discuss their estate planning / planning for incapacity needs and help determine their wishes. The volunteers will take the client’s needs and interests and draft the necessary estate planning / planning for incapacity documents and have the documents ready for review and signing with the client at the second meeting. At the second meeting, the volunteer will meet again with the client to execute the documents. WWC legal staff, notaries, and witnesses will be available during the second meeting to ensure proper execution of documents.
For questions, please contact WWC-LSP at (202) 939-7627 or lbrubaker@wwc.org.
