Happy New Year from GAYLAW!
Did you know that the name "GAYLAW" is an acronym for "Gay and Lesbian Attorneys of Washington" and dates back to GAYLAW's inception as an independent voluntary bar association in 1990? GAYLAW historical documents note that "[a]s GAYLAW grew and matured, so did the gay and lesbian movement. GAYLAW responded by welcoming the inclusion of bisexual and transgender issues, members and leaders. By 1999, GAYLAW had changed its tagline to Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Attorneys of Washington."
GAYLAW is proud of its roots and its progress over the past two decades. Today, GAYLAW recruits and trains volunteer attorneys to provide pro bono legal services for people living with HIV/AIDS; sponsors the DC Bar Candidates Forum; organizes continuing legal education programs; coordinates a mentor-mentee program; hosts monthly networking events; runs an attorney referral program; and helps its affiliate, the GAYLAW Education Fund, to provide grants to students working at legal jobs supporting the LGBT community in and around Washington, DC.
GAYLAW continues to be a voice for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender legal community in the national capital area. This New Year brings new ideas, and we hope you will join us as we continually work to serve you more effectively.
Please Note! Changes to Monthly Networking Social
In an effort to make GAYLAW's monthly networking social more convenient and effective, the event will now be held on the THIRD Thursday of every month from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Mark your calendars and come discover improvements GAYLAW has made in the New Year.
Mentor-Mentee Program
Another round of mentor-mentee matches has just been notified. GAYLAW always needs experienced legal professionals to serve as mentors! For information and sign-up forms, please visit www.gaylaw.org/lawstudents.html or email GaylawMentorship@gmail.com.
GAYLAW is excited to provide mentees with the chance to benefit from an environment in which it is safe to seek career advice and openly discuss professional issues and concerns. Serving as a mentor is an opportunity to not only give back to the community and support a new generation of LGBT lawyers, but also to learn from the unique perspective of your mentee. Each pair should result in a reciprocal learning experience that contributes to a community that is, on the whole, more aware, active, and effective than each individual was before.
In 2010, GAYLAW celebrated its 20th anniversary by looking back at its history and forward to the struggle ahead. Watch as past and present voices of GAYLAW discuss the origins and progress of the LGBT bar association of Washington, D.C.
